Many people use the word “home” loosely. I hate to admit it but…I am guilty of referring to a hotel room as “home.” Does home necessarily have to be a place? Is “home” the house you grew up in as a child or is it your super cool new house in the South Side (until your lease is up at least)? Both can be true depending on the individual.
Personally, I am starting to associate “home” with a feeling. For one to feel “home,” I think a degree of peace needs to be felt, regardless of location. Whether it is at the dinner table with your family or in the arms of the one you love, peace must be present. The feeling of home is, in my opinion, one of the most important feelings because it goes hand and hand with Love.
Two weeks ago, I left one home to go to another. Rome is not a place where I feel out of my element—right now, it is where I am living. It is my home. However, getting off a 9-hour flight and being on American soil… it is a feeling that cannot really be described in words.
The most rewarding aspect of traveling is appreciating everything that you already have waiting for you when you get back. If it isn’t there when you do get back, it wasn’t real enough to keep around.
Leaving home makes you appreciate it that much more when you return. It helps your recognize all the blessings in your life that you tend to overlook in the every day hustle and bustle of life. Count your blessings and go somewhere new.
